Federal-compliant card

California REAL ID

Who needs it, what to bring and how to apply

A California REAL ID is a driver’s license or ID card that meets federal standards, marked with a golden bear and a star. Since May 7, 2025, you need it, or another accepted ID like a passport, to board domestic flights and enter secure federal facilities. Getting one takes one identity document, two residency documents and an office visit.

What Is a California REAL ID?

It’s not a separate card. A REAL ID is a regular California driver’s license or ID card issued after DMV checks your identity and residency against federal rules.

  • It’s optional. DMV says you don’t need a REAL ID if you’ll use a passport, passport card, military ID or another federally accepted ID instead.

  • It works for driving like any license. You can choose REAL ID with any noncommercial license class. Our California driver’s license guide explains the classes.

  • Kids flying with an adult don’t need ID under TSA rules, but the adult traveling with them does.

What If Your Residency Documents Aren’t in Your Name?

Residency papers are where the details matter most. These rules from DMV’s checklist cover the usual snags, and the chart shows how to link documents that are in someone else’s name.

  • Two different documents. DMV asks for two different printed documents, such as a phone bill and a bank statement.
  • Same address as your application. Both need your first and last name and the California mailing address you entered.
  • Using a P.O. box? One document has to show both the P.O. box and your home address. The other can show only the P.O. box.
  • Blacking out amounts is fine. You can hide things like a balance due, but not the name or address.
  • Teens can use a parent’s document along with a tracing document such as a birth certificate.

Can Non-U.S. Citizens Get a California REAL ID?

Yes, if you can prove current legal presence in the U.S. with an accepted identity document. How long the card lasts depends on your status.

Green card holders

Bring a valid Permanent Resident Card. An expired card can work with a Notice of Action (I-797C) or an Approval Notice (I-797).

Eligible, shorter card

Temporary legal status

Visa holders, DACA recipients and TPS beneficiaries qualify. The card expires on the same date as your legal presence document. DACA recipients renew a REAL ID at an office, not by mail.

Not eligible

AB 60 license holders

People applying for or renewing an AB 60 driver’s license can’t get a REAL ID. If your status changes and you can prove legal presence, you may be able to upgrade later.
