California Driver’s License
Your route from permit to plastic card
A California driver’s license is the card that lets you drive on California roads, and you have to carry it whenever you drive. How you get one depends on where you’re starting: a teen with no experience, an adult who has never been licensed, or a driver moving here with a license from another state or country.

Which Type of California Driver’s License Do You Need?
Most people need a Class C license. The other noncommercial classes cover motorcycles and large recreational rigs. Each of these classes can be issued as a REAL ID or as a standard, federal non-compliant card.
Basic license (Class C)
A standard car or truck for personal use. You can also tow:
- A single vehicle with a GVWR of 10,000 lbs. or less, including a tow dolly.
- With a vehicle of 4,000 lbs. or more unladen: a trailer coach or fifth-wheel travel trailer under 10,000 lbs. GVWR, when not towing for pay.
- A fifth-wheel travel trailer over 10,000 but under 15,000 lbs. GVWR, not for pay, with an endorsement.
Motorcycle (Class M1 or M2)
A two-wheel motorized vehicle. Motorcycle applicants follow their own permit rules, including a motorcycle safety course for riders 15½ to 21. See our California motorcycle license guide for each step.
Noncommercial Class A
Travel trailers or fifth wheels over 15,000 lbs. GVWR, or a trailer coach over 10,000 lbs. GVWR, when the towing isn’t for pay.
Noncommercial Class B
A housecar or motorhome over 40 feet but not over 45 feet, with an endorsement.
Driving for work in a truck or bus needs a commercial license (CDL), which has its own classes, permit, training and fees. Our California CDL license guide covers each step.
How Do You Get a Driver’s License in California?
Choose your starting point to see each stop in order, with a link to the official DMV page behind it. The route map below the tool shows how the four paths compare.
Teen route: permit at 15½, license at 16+
- Start driver education
Get a certificate of completion or enrollment. Teens over 17½ can skip it but can’t take the drive test until 18.
- Apply online with a parent
Fill out the DL/ID application ↗. A parent or guardian signs and accepts financial responsibility.
- Office visit for the permit
Bring identity and residency proof, pay the fee, pass the vision exam and the knowledge test. Our California learners permit guide covers this step, and the written test appointment guide covers the booking.
- Six months of practice
Begin driver training with an instructor, then log 50 hours, 10 at night, with a licensed driver 25 or older. The driver handbook and a practice quiz keep the rules fresh.
- Drive test at 16 or older
Book it after six months with the permit. See our driving test appointment guide.
- Provisional license
Your first year comes with restrictions, covered further down this page.

What Can a Teen Do With a Provisional License?
Drivers under 18 get a provisional license. DMV treats you as a provisional driver for your first year, and these limits apply during that time.
No driving 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The nighttime limit covers your first 12 months with the license.
No passengers under 20
Unless a parent, guardian, or California-licensed driver 25 or older rides along.
No driving for pay
You also can’t drive anything that needs a commercial Class A, B or C license.
What Documents Do You Need for a California Driver’s License?
Every route uses the same three building blocks. What changes is whether you go for a REAL ID card or a standard one. Not sure which office visit to book? Our guide to DMV appointment types shows the exact option to pick.
Proof of identity
An original or certified copy of an accepted document. Your current true full name has to appear on it, or you’ll need name-change paperwork.
Social Security number
If you have one, the law requires it on your application. DMV asks for it at the office too.
California residency
Required if you’ve never held a California DL or ID card. A REAL ID needs two different residency documents.
REAL ID or standard card?
A REAL ID adds the federal check you need to board domestic flights with your license. It takes a few extra documents, which our California REAL ID guide lists in a checklist.
Can’t prove legal presence?
California offers AB 60 licenses to residents who can’t show legal presence but meet DMV’s identity and residency rules. The steps include a knowledge test, a drive test, and a Secondary Review interview if your documents need it. Start with DMV’s AB 60 page ↗.
How Long Does It Take to Get Your License Card?
You don’t leave the office with the plastic card. DMV prints and mails it, and you drive on a temporary license in the meantime.
Days of temporary license
DMV issues a temporary license after you pass, valid for 60 days.
Weeks for the card
The license arrives by mail within three to four weeks after you pass.
Veteran designation. Bring a completed Veteran Status Verification Form (VSD-001) from a County Veterans Service Office to add “VETERAN” to the front of your card.
Organ donor dot. Join the Donate Life California registry and a pink “DONOR” dot prints on your license.
How Much Does a California Driver’s License Cost?
The application fee is nonrefundable and stays valid for 12 months. It covers three tries at each knowledge test and up to three drive tests, though a failed drive test adds a retest fee.
| What you’re applying for | Fee |
|---|---|
| Class C license, original or renewal | $46 |
| Motorcycle (M1/M2), original or renewal | $46 |
| Noncommercial Class A or B, original | $46 |
| Replacement for a lost or stolen Class C card | $37 |
| Behind-the-wheel retest (Class C) | $9 |
| Commercial Class A or B, original | $100 |
Card payments carry a service fee, from 1.95% online to 2.1% at an office. Renewing an existing license? Our California DMV renewal guide covers online and in-person options.
