How Do You Renew a California Driver’s License Online?

Online renewal takes a few minutes once your details are right. The timeline below shows when each part happens around your expiration date.

  1. Fix your address first

Moved? Update your DMV address at least five days before you renew, so the card goes to the right place.

  2. Open the renewal

Choose standard renewal on dmv.ca.gov. Have your renewal notice handy, or request a copy if it never came.

  3. Take eLearning if asked

If a knowledge test is required, the license-only eLearning course is pass-only and works on a phone.

  4. Pay the fee

The application fee is nonrefundable and stays valid for 12 months.

  5. Watch the mailbox

The card usually arrives in two to four weeks. Check your status online if 60 days pass.

Drivers 70 and older

How Do Drivers 70 and Older Renew Their License?

DMV says drivers 70+ must renew their license in person every five years. Most of the work can still be done online first, which shortens the office visit.

  • 1

    Start the application online

Fill out the driver’s license and ID application before your visit to save time at the counter.

  • 2

    Check for a test

You might not need a knowledge test. Your renewal notice says whether you do. If so, pick eLearning on the online application.

  • 3

    Finish at the office

At the visit, DMV takes your thumbprint and photo and gives the vision exam. Book the “Renew DL (Seniors Age 70+)” appointment.

Good to know

Only the driver’s license has the in-person rule. A California ID card for someone 62 or older is free.

Your renewal notice is the best guide. It tells you whether a test is due and whether you must come in.

Special situations

What If Your License Is Expired or You Want REAL ID?

These three cases trip people up most often. Each one changes where you finish.

Already expired

No late fee, but don’t wait

DMV charges no late fee to renew an expired license, and online renewal stays open for 12 months after the expiration date.

REAL ID

Start online, finish in person

You can choose to convert to REAL ID while renewing online, but a first REAL ID is completed at an office with your original documents. See which documents a REAL ID needs.

Commercial

CDL renewals go to an office

DMV says commercial licenses are renewed at a field office, not online. Make sure your address and details are current before you go.

Renewing your car’s tags instead? That’s a separate process. Use our vehicle registration renewal guide, or find a DMV office or kiosk near you.
