Behind-the-wheel test

California DMV Driving Test Appointment

Book it, prep the car, pass the drive

A California DMV driving test appointment is the only way to take the behind-the-wheel test, because DMV does not give driving tests without one. Book on dmv.ca.gov or by phone, then show up with your permit, a licensed driver, and a car that passes the pre-drive safety check.

How Do You Schedule a California DMV Driving Test?

Open the DMV appointment page and pick your vehicle under the drive test options, not an office visit. Then choose a field office that offers the test, select a date and time, and save the confirmation number.

Most drivers

Automobile

The Class C road test for a regular car license. Choose this unless you’re testing for a motorcycle or commercial license.

Motorcycle

For a Class M license skills test. Motorcycle testing has its own handbook and rules.

Commercial

For commercial driver’s license (CDL) skills testing, with a different retest fee.

Online

Use the drive test buttons on the DMV appointment page. Have your permit details ready. If the office you want is full, compare others in our guide to DMV locations.

By phone

Call 1-800-777-0133 during regular business hours to book with DMV. Need a different kind of visit instead? See all California DMV appointment types.

Before you book

What Do You Need Before Taking the Driving Test?

Everyone needs an instruction permit first, which means passing the knowledge test at an earlier visit. Drivers under 18 also have to meet time, training and practice requirements before DMV lets them schedule the road test.

Under 18 Provisional

  1. Be at least 16 years old.
  2. Hold a permit for at least 6 months, or turn 18.
  3. Finish driver education and driver training, and keep the proof.
  4. Log 50 hours of supervised driving with a licensed driver 25 or older, including 10 hours at night.
  5. Bring a California-licensed driver age 25+ on test day.

18 and older Adult

  1. Pass the DMV knowledge test and get your instruction permit. Our written test appointment guide covers booking that visit.
  2. Practice with a California-licensed driver who is at least 18 and can take control if needed.
  3. Book the road test once you can drive normal traffic calmly.
  4. Bring a licensed driver 18+ unless you’re already licensed to drive.

Studying the rules again before the drive helps with the “apply traffic laws in real situations” part of the score. The California Driver’s Handbook and a quick practice test are good refreshers.

Pre-drive safety check

Will Your Car Pass the DMV Pre-Drive Check?

Before you drive, the examiner checks your car and asks you to find and use certain controls. If the car doesn’t meet DMV’s minimum standard, the test is rescheduled. Tap each item, check it on your car, and mark it done.

Roll it all the way down and up the day before. A stuck power window is an easy reason to be sent home.

What Happens During the Behind-the-Wheel Test?

After the safety check, you drive with a DMV examiner in the car. The examiner looks at whether you control the vehicle safely, show safe habits, and apply traffic laws in real situations. Expect two directions at once, such as two turns in a row.

Allowed during the test

  • Backup cameras and blind spot monitors, as long as you still turn your head and check mirrors.
  • An interpreter during the pre-drive check only, to identify controls.
  • Telling the examiner you never plan to drive on freeways. The freeway part is skipped and your license gets a freeway restriction.

Not allowed

  • Driver assist features like automated parallel parking, lane departure assist and adaptive cruise control.
  • Video or audio recording devices. If one can’t be turned off, it must be blocked.
  • Passengers. Only the examiner rides along, with limited exceptions such as service animals.

Can You Show the Hand-and-Arm Signals?

The examiner can ask for the three arm signals during the pre-drive check, and many first-timers freeze here. Practice them from the driver’s seat with the window down.

What Happens If You Pass or Fail the Driving Test?

You get your result right after the drive. A pass ends with a temporary license. A fail means booking another test on a different day, within the limits of your application.

You passed

Temporary license
DMV issues a temporary driver’s license, valid for 60 days.
Card by mail
Your permanent license arrives by mail within 3–4 weeks.
Not here after 60 days?
Call 1-800-777-0133 to check the status.

You didn’t pass

Book again
Schedule a new driving test on another day. A retest fee applies; DMV’s fee schedule lists $9 for a Class C retest.
Minors wait 14 days
Drivers under 18 must wait 14 days, not counting the day of the failed test.
Three attempts
Your application fee covers three tries. After a third fail, the application is no longer valid and you reapply.

Keep an eye on the calendar too. DMV says the application and fee are valid for 12 months, so plan retests well inside that window. The full licensing path is in our California driver’s license guide.

Can You Use a Rental or Borrowed Car for the Test?

Yes, if the car meets the same safety standard and the paperwork is in order. The details differ for rentals.

Rental car

Your name must be on the rental contract, and the contract must not exclude behind-the-wheel drive tests. Read the fine print before booking, since some rental agreements do.

Family or borrowed car

Bring valid registration and proof of insurance for that car, and practice in it. During the pre-drive check you must find and use controls like the wipers, parking brake and signals, so learn them in that exact car.
