What Types of DMV Locations Are There in California?

“DMV near me” can mean six different kinds of places. Only field offices offer the full counter, and the rest are built for specific jobs. If you just need a time slot, start on our page to book a California DMV appointment.

How Do You Check a DMV Office Before You Go?

Every field office has its own page on dmv.ca.gov. Two minutes there can save you a wasted trip. The sample below is a simplified layout with made-up details, and the numbers match the notes beside it.

  1. Check today’s hours

The page lists each day for about two weeks ahead, so you’ll spot a holiday closure before you leave. Times can differ by day, so don’t assume yesterday’s hours.

  2. Compare both wait times

DMV shows the current wait with and without an appointment. If the no-appointment wait is long, use the same-day virtual line or book ahead instead.

  3. Confirm your service is listed

Not every location does everything. A Commercial Drive Test Center, for example, lists testing but not license renewals.

  4. Try the next town over

The nearby list puts other offices’ wait times side by side, and a slightly longer drive can mean a much shorter line.

Self-service

Where Are DMV Kiosks, and What Can They Do?

DMV kiosks are touchscreen terminals inside select field offices and in stores such as supermarkets. A registration renewal there gets you your card and sticker right away, and the line is often much shorter than at the counter.

  • Spot them on office pages. Offices with a terminal say so on their DMV page and list Self Service Terminals under Services Provided.
  • Check the hours. DMV says kiosks are available during regular business hours, so check the host location’s hours.
  • Need help at the machine? DMV runs a kiosk support line at 1-833-947-1670.

How Do You Pick the Best DMV Office Near You?

The closest office isn’t always the best one. Run through these stops before you choose where to go.

  1. Filter by service, not distance

On the locator, choose your exact service, then set a 10, 25 or 40 mile radius. Offices that can’t do your task drop out.

  2. Check it on the day

Open the office page the morning you go. Status and hours can change, and DMV posts closures there.

  3. Match the visit to the clock

Knowledge tests have to start before 4:30 p.m., so a late-afternoon arrival can mean a second trip. Warm up first with our free practice test.

  4. Weigh partner fees

DMV says business partners may charge for their services. A shorter wait can be worth it, but ask the price first.

  5. Bring a backup payment

Card payments at an office carry a 2.1% service fee, and offices also take cash, checks and money orders.

  6. Use only DMV’s locator

Look-alike sites list offices too, and some charge extra fees. Search on dmv.ca.gov and book there or by phone.
