California DMV Vehicle Registration Renewal
Renew on time, skip the counter, and avoid late penalties
California DMV vehicle registration renewal can be done online, by phone, at a self-service kiosk, by mail, or through a DMV business partner. You can renew as soon as your notice arrives. DMV has no grace period, so penalties start the day after your registration expires, and any required smog check has to be done first.

How Can You Renew Your Car Registration in California?
Most renewals don’t need an office visit, so start with one of these. Need a kiosk or partner nearby? Use our DMV locations finder. If your notice requires a visit, here’s how to book a DMV appointment.
Online
Renew on dmv.ca.gov as soon as your notice arrives. It works when your insurer reports to DMV electronically and any smog certification is already on file.
By phone
Call 1-800-777-0133 and follow the prompts. Keep your plate number and the last 5 digits of your VIN in front of you.
At a DMV kiosk
Self-service kiosks in select DMV offices and stores take cards, and cash at DMV offices and some stores. You leave with your registration card and sticker.
By mail
Use this if you have time to wait or need to send documents. Mail your renewal to:
DMV RenewalPO Box 942897
Sacramento, CA 94269-0001
Business partner
DMV-authorized partners can renew and print your sticker, often with a shorter wait. They’re allowed to add their own service fee.
Track it
After you renew, check DMV’s Registration Renewal Status page. If a mailed check hasn’t cleared in 8 weeks, contact DMV. Don’t stop payment on it.
What Fees Are on a California Registration Renewal?
Your notice adds up several separate fees. Some are flat, and others depend on your car’s value or your county. For an estimate, use DMV’s renewal fee calculator; the exact amount is on your notice.
| Fee | How it’s set | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Registration fee | Flat, includes a $3 alternative fuel and technology fee | $76 |
| California Highway Patrol fee | Flat | $34 |
| Vehicle license fee (VLF) | Share of the car’s value; it drops over the first 11 renewal years | 0.65% |
| Transportation improvement fee | Tiered by the car’s value | $33–$231 |
| County or district fees | Set where you live | Varies |
| Smog abatement fee | Charged to newer cars that skip the inspection | $20 |
| Road improvement fee | Zero-emission cars, model year 2020 and later | $121 |
Transportation improvement fee
- Value $0–$4,999$33
- $5,000–$24,999$66
- $25,000–$34,999$132
- $35,000–$59,999$198
- $60,000 and up$231
DMV notes all fees can change with the law. No notice about 60 days before expiration? Contact DMV or use its fee calculator.
Do You Need a Smog Check to Renew Your Registration?
If your notice says smog certification is required, DMV can’t finish the renewal until a station sends the result. A failed smog check means the registration won’t be renewed. The chart walks you through it.
Some vehicles skip the inspection, such as very old gas cars, older or heavy diesels, electric vehicles and motorcycles. Gas cars eight model years old or newer pay the smog abatement fee instead. Our California smog check guide lists every exemption.
What Happens If You Renew Your Registration Late?
- No grace period. DMV says registration expires on a specific day, and penalties begin right after it.
- Two kinds of penalty. A percentage of your vehicle license fee and weight fee, plus a flat registration late fee and a CHP late fee.
- It keeps climbing. The ladder shows how each step raises the cost, so renewing even a few days late is cheaper than waiting a month.
What If You Won’t Drive the Car or Lost Your Sticker?
Two common situations change what you pay or what you file. Just moved? Change your address with DMV first, so your renewal notice reaches you. Renewing your driver’s license instead? See our California DMV renewal online guide. Bought a car or moving one in from another state instead? See our guide to registering a vehicle in California.
File Planned Nonoperation (PNO)
- Apply for PNO online and pay the PNO filing fee instead of the full renewal.
- You can file up to 90 days after expiration, but late penalties are added to the PNO filing fee.
- If you drive it, or park it where it could be ticketed, you owe the full fees and penalties for that year.
Replace a sticker or registration card
- A DMV kiosk or many business partners can replace them quickly.
- By mail or in person, send the Application for Replacement Plates, Stickers, Documents (REG 156) with the fee.
- A lost title is replaced with form REG 227 and a duplicate fee.
Vehicle Registration Renewal FAQs
When can I renew my California vehicle registration?
You can renew as soon as you receive your renewal notice. DMV usually sends it about 60 days before your registration expires.
Is there a grace period for registration renewal in California?
No. DMV says there is no grace period. Late penalties start the day after your registration expires.
How much is the late fee for California registration?
It depends on how late you are. From 1 to 10 days late, it’s 10% of the vehicle license fee and weight fee plus a $10 registration late fee and a $10 CHP late fee, and it rises from there.
Can I renew my registration without a smog check?
Only if your vehicle is exempt or your notice doesn’t require one. If smog certification is required, DMV can’t finish the renewal until it’s done.
Why can’t I renew my registration online?
Common reasons are a missing smog certification, insurance your company doesn’t report electronically, or unpaid parking tickets on your notice. Renew by mail or at a DMV location in those cases.
Can I pay my registration renewal with cash?
Yes, at DMV kiosks that take cash, which includes kiosks in DMV offices and some stores. Online and phone renewals use a card or bank account.
What is the address to mail my registration renewal?
DMV Renewal, PO Box 942897, Sacramento, CA 94269-0001.
What if I won’t be driving my car this year?
File Planned Nonoperation (PNO) and pay the PNO fee instead of renewing. You can’t drive it or park it on a public road while it’s on PNO.
